The government of Maharashtra has initiated a ground-breaking initiative known as the Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme that aims to improve educational and health-related opportunities for girls in their state. The flagship initiative actually provides direct financial benefits to families, as soon as a daughter is born, reinforcing the state’s commitment to gender justice and the support of girls. The state government seeks to advance the welfare of girls and confronting damaging cultural attitudes towards female infanticide and child marriage.
Initially launched in 2016, the program is already being expanded to include families with an annual income of up to ₹7.5 lakh, and it will continue to seek methods to include an even larger segment of the population. In addition to empowering the girl child, the program integrates educational objectives and conditional family planning within a well-articulated framework of financial incentives (or disincentives) and social policy.
Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme
The scheme aims to achieve several objectives that link public policy with social welfare. The major goal of the program is to break down entrenched social biases against the female gender in society through fiscal incentives to families in all income brackets, in order to enhance their ability to raise daughters.
The program also intends to offer future empowerment, beyond immediate financial assistance, to individuals by providing educational and legal protections. The program disincentivizes child marriage by rewarding girls who remain unmarried and complete high school before turning 18.
